Sled Dogs Earn Their Keep Giving Rides inCity Parks

THE MOSCOW TIMES[4 - The Moscow Times 2012]

Aresourceful dog owner is making abusiness out ofgiving dog sled rides inMoscow parks. Alexander Voronin owns 11dogs. He began raising huskies five years ago, and for the last two years he has been making money on dog sled rides. Im not doing this for the money, but tokeep the dogs inhealthy physical condition, Voronin told The Moscow Times.

Anyone can come toSokolniki Park or toGorky Park and get aride on asled powered byhis canines. Rides are offered on weekends from noon until 7:00p.m.The schedule for the weekdays changes, depending on the number ofpark visitors. The charge for rides, which are regulated bythe park, is 250rubles ($8) per child and 400rubles per adult for 200-meter rides inSokolniki. At Gorky Park the rates are 150rubles and 300rubles, respectively.

One dog can pull achild, while adults sometimes need two. If acustomer yearns for the true feeling ofspeeding across the tundra, four or five dogs can be yoked. The dog sleds can reach speeds ofup to20kilometers per hour. Voronin says he spends 4,400rubles per month tofeed his dogs. Ofcourse, Ihave business rivals, but nobody is doing dog sled rides for children. They prefer offering VIP sled rides for events and clubs, hesaid
